Is solar powered fishing lamps the future in Lake Victoria?

Fishers Union Organisation (FUO), in Partnership with Right Light Company from UK, is doing research on “The needs for alternative light sources in the night fishing industry of lake Victoria (Sardines)” The aim of the research project is to identify efficient sustainable and cheaper solutions than the use of pressurized kerosene lanterns. We aim to use this research to develop solar powered fishing lamps to eliminate the serious threat that the use of kerosene lanterns poses to the fisherman’s health and the entire ecosystem of Lake Victoria and creating a sustainable fishing industry hence improve the economic status of the fisherman and communities. FUO is testing a submersible solar lumps in two Islands namely, Kasalazi and Bugombe.
